SONGS FROM THE DRESS REHEARSAL – Steve Tilston
Released: March 7, 2005 through RSK Distribution
Cat no. MSMCD132
Label: Market Square
“A songwriter and guitarist I admire” says.. Bert Jansch
A first-time reissue of the much sought-after 1976 album, “Song From the Dress Rehearsal” by Steve Tilston gets released by Market Square this March (2005).
This body of work returns some of his finest songs to the canon of work available now by this accomplished and enduring British singer-songwriter.
Produced by Rupert Hine (later to produce for an eclectic mix of artists including Camel, Kevin Ayers, Tina Turner, Chris de Burgh, Stevie Nicks), the album features musical accompaniment from Hine, John G Perry (ex-Quantum Jump) and Michael Giles (ex-King Crimson).
The set is bolstered further with five extra tracks of previously unreleased Tilston material from 1979 produced by Stefan Grossman.
Says Tilston:
“ 'Songs From The Dress Rehearsal' was released on my own (short-lived and therefore highly-collectable!) Cornucopia label and recorded in the blistering hot summer of 1976 at King Crimson drummer Mike Giles' studio in the New Forest of southern England.
“I remember it being so hot that trees were spontaneously combusting in the not too far distance. I also remember at first being frustrated at the sound of the fire engines punctuating the recording session, but after witnessing a tree, barely a hundred yards away, crackle and turn into a giant Roman candle, I became (swiftly) more circumspect!
Steve continues:
“At first, it was daunting having to take a backward step into the mental murk to listen again to these songs. It’s akin to finding an old dusty diary, that causes sneezing and some little orbital discomfort on the first re-opening.
“A lot of these songs document a period in my life that was not the happiest. That said, the more I delved, the more I remembered some wonderfully joyous times and some great people - some of whom I still see, some I don't and some I can't.”
About Steve
Steve Tilston is a celebrated British singer-songwriter, winning as much praise for his superb guitar playing as his songwriting and vocal style.
His canon of work is widely recognised within the world of folk and contemporary music throughout Europe, Australia and the USA.
Born in Liverpool and raised in the Midlands of England, Steve has been ploughing his own artistic furrow, turning out quality albums since the early 1970s. In the past, Steve has toured as guitarist with Ballet Rambert; as a member of Ship of Fools; with John Renbourn; and more recently WAZ!
Tilston songs have been recorded by Fairport Convention, Dolores Keane, The House Band, Peter Bellamy, North Cregg, Bob Fox, amongst others. His work has also been used for radio and TV documentary work.
Steve tours solo, with other artists, and with his own band. He has recently returned from a tour of Australia and in the last few weeks he completed a UK tour with USA songwriter and very fine guitar player Brooks Williams.
Steve undertakes a further, solo UK tour in April to promote “Songs >From The Dress Rehearsal” and a new single - ‘Rare Thing’ - from his acclaimed and latest album of new recordings, “Such & Such” (Market Square MSMCD124).

Press Reviews …
“Tilston’s work simply gets better as time goes on” Mojo
“Steve Tilston, singer songwriter and exquisite guitarist of the English folk-baroque school, is hard on the heels of Richard Thompson in the perennially underrated stakes”. Q Magazine
“His musicianship is beyond question, while the arrangements set a standard against which other acoustic guitar albums ought to be measured.” Weekend Telegraph
“Steve is that very rare combination of singer/songwriter and guitarist who actually excels in all departments …” fRoots
“ … a singer/songwriter of rare talent … the polish of his performance and the technical proficiency of his lyric writing is staggering. He weaves classic, lingering melodies that are both warm and haunting, producing astringent, uncompromising music that thrives on rare and demanding intimacy.” Folk On Tap
He is one of my and Fairport Convention's favourite performers. If you haven't heard him, I suggest you go and check him out as soon as possible. A remarkable talent! ...

It seems to me that Steve Tilston has never sought fame on anything but his own terms. He has been driven by his own enthusiasm for his chosen subject matter.
He writes beautiful words and melodies and when our generation of songwriters is assessed on our contribution to our time, Steve's work will rank alongside much better known artists. Ralph McTell
