Pierre's Plastic Dream - first time release for rare UK 60s pop, psych and r'nb Here's a treat for 1960s pop completists: a compilation of songs by English bands Our Plastic Dream, The Silence, The Owl and The Jeeps including their singles and previously unheard demos 'Pierre's Plastic Dream' (Market Square MSMCD101) is a 21 track compilation of work by these bands fronted by producer and songwriter Pierre Tubbs, who recorded them in a converted garage at his parents' house in Surrey, England between 1966 and 1968.
Tubbs - who went on to enjoy a successful career as a songwriter and producer - and his bands could turn their hands to most of the prevailing musical styles. This talent is reflected by the diverse songs on offer here and in music journalist Kieron Tyler's booklet notes where they are likened to the work of the Lovin' Spoonful, the Four Seasons, the Beach Boys, the Strangeloves, and Barry Ryan. Tubbs and his bands were highly successful in evoking pop Americana without aping or lampooning it in the process. Yet they were British through and through - nice middle-class boys from leafy Surrey, only spiked by the spirit of the Bonzos (evidenced in Tubbs' drole spoken word 'hidden' track). Tracks include Our Plastic Dream's psych masterpiece, "A little Bit of Shangrila", the Owl's balladeering, effects-laden "Run To The Sun" (Tubbs's "Sargeant Pepper" and the Silence's driving "Hey You Lolita" (released in the US on Redbird). The Pierre Tubbs web site is at www.kiss-it.net/pierretubbs. " ... there's a particular English eccentricity at work that isn't without appeal. If you were a fan of this stuff in the '60s, then you're going to find this CD indispensable." LUKE Aug. 1999
