ROD CLEMENTS:

STAMPING GROUND

Market Square Records MSMCD107

Geordie Folk Rockers Lindisfarne sadly decided to call it a day earlier this year but one of their founder members continues to work on as a solo performer.

Rod Clements released “Stamping Ground” back in 2000, and while I suspect most Lindisfarne fans will own this album it’s well worth checking out as it’s a cracking album with great songs and top notch playing and arrangements.

Accompanied by fellow ex Lindisfarne members Ian Thomson (Bass) and Dave Hull Denholm (Guitars) Clements moves centre stage with a collection of songs that have been with him for a long time and are a reflection of events, people and places encountered during a 30 year career as a working musician.

Rod has absorbed many styles of music during this time and they’re all on show on this album.

The opening title track sets the scene for the rest of the album with a laid back blues feel giving way to the unmistakable sound of the Blues Harp of Fraser Spiers ( who has worked with Rod and Rab Noakes in The Varaflames ).

Other standouts are Hattie McDaniel at The Oscars 1939 featuring just Rod and his Dobro, the folky Roads of East Northumberland with some haunting Northumbrian Pipes from Kathryn Tickell and fine vocals from Thea Gilmore on the Rockier Black Rain.

This is a superbly crafted recording with no filler and not a note wasted.

Rod is working on a follow up album and you can catch him at various UK venues over the next few months.
