LUMINOS

"Seize The Day"

Genre: Progressive rock

Luminos hail from the rural hinterland of north Essex county in England. Drive north east from London, and you come to a land of sweeping skies presiding over vast fields, sloping gently and inexorably to the sea.

It's a long-occupied land, a place which the present cannot obscure the past for long in. Its gloss rubs off easily to betray something far larger, deeper and timeless.

Their mutual love of driving, symphonic progressive rock is evident in this first release from Essex progressive rock act, Luminos.

Notwithstanding respect for contemporary acts such as Jadis, IQ and Mostly Autumn, their influences in the music of forebears from previous decades (classic Brit prog line-ups Camel, All About Eve, Caravan as well as Canada's Heart amongst them) are equally prominent in this fine debut.

In keeping with the adage that the best things do what they say on the box, these songs measure this land's culture and essence in the Luminos collective's focus on love, life, loss, reward.

"Seize The Day" is released by Market Square Records (MSMCD115) in May. UK distribution through RSK/BMG.

The Songs

Inner Self

"Life is never a smooth ride. Inner Self is about rising above those people and situations that conspire to make it harder. It's a subject everybody can relate to at some time or other. Trust in yourself."

Living On the Edge Of Time

"I found out a hard way that time doesn't hang around and that before you know it, the day is done. The song is about recognising this and making the most of the moment. What's the time? The time is now."

A Small Boy, A Bird In History

"During the Sudanese famine of 1993, Kevin Carter took a photograph of a small boy, alive, but lying, collapsed, in a field. Behind him, waiting its moment patiently, sat a vulture.

That picture went straight on the front page of The New York Times and Carter won a Pulizter Prize. At the time, when asked what happened after the shot, Carter related how he had chased the vulture away, how the boy had risen and escaped. The happy story.

"In truth though, Carter had taken his picture and left. He later confessed how sorry he was he had not picked up the child. Two months later, he killed himself.

"The song accepts that Carter's inaction was inexcusable but recognises that the picture brought home to millions the horror of famine. Carter's family still receive letters from children from around the planet who have been moved by that picture and declared a resolve to fight hunger."

Echoes In A Lonely City

"As an instrumental, this is not so much a story as a sensation. It's a walking piece, an accompaniment to a solitary journey in a autumnal metropolis where the sounds of the city are evident to the ear but are never tangible to the walker who hears life two blocks away."

It's Your Turn To Fly

"Richard Bach's Jonathan Livingstone Seagull was a hugely successful book of the 70s. It tapped perfectly into a public need for some alternative take on life. I love it for its hope and how it assures us not to be afraid to realise our potential, to rise above mediocrity and negativity, and recognise the need for dark and light, happy and sad … life constantly changing."

If Only For A While

"In a celebrity culture, the song counsels that - if only for a while - we remember the unsung heroes of life, the people who really matter in life: mothers, fathers, siblings. Not for setting the world on fire but for enhancing our share in it, our moment."

Angel

"This is themed around isolation, of being locked out of someone's life - someone very dear. There is no malice or anger - only a plea for the resumption of contact."

The Voyage (Ocean Freedom)

"Dedicated to Julian Gibb, who was a pleasure to know. Amber and I were sailing in the Ionian Islands off Greece in May 1997. Julian was captain, taught us the ropes, and even walked on water (actually he was towed majestically behind the boat on a board - we called the practice 'scurfing'). Julian died in 1999. He was great. I like to think of him as captain of another boat now, sailing another sea."

Always In My Heart

"A real-love song - love after the pink, fluffy stuff of 'lurve' has subsided: when it's very fabric is tested and sometimes torn through separation, estrangement and related issues. It's equally a life song - it, as with everything, goes bang!
