Steve Ashley - English folk singer-songwriter
debut reissued with extra tracks
English folk singer-songwriter Steve
Ashley's acclaimed 1974 debut, Stroll On, has been reissued with extra tracks
from the 1971 sessions and a rare 1974 single outing with Fairport Convention
'Nine' members
Titled 'Stroll On - Revisited', the album
(Market Square MSMCD104) features some of Ashley's finest songs (Fire And
Wine, Silly Summer Games, Follow On) and two extra tracks from the 1971 Olympic
Studios sessions ('Spirit Of Christmas'; 'Love In A Funny Way') together
with a 1974 single with Fairport Convention members ('Old Rock 'n'
Roll).
The album followed Market Square's release
of a much-welcomed 17-track retrospective of Steve Ashley's career
('The Test of Time' MSMCD102).
Working with Ashley on 'Stroll On - Revisited'
are some of folk rock's best known names including Dave Swarbrick,
Dave Mattacks, Simon Nicol, Jerry Donahue, Ashley
Hutchings, Danny Thompson, Dave Pegg, and Barry
Dransfield. Also featured is Nick Drake arranger, Robert Kirby,
conducting a string section of members of the London Symphony
Orchestra.
A fully-illustrated 16-page booklet includes
song details, lyrics, rare and previously unpublished photography and an
appraisal of this work by folk music critic Karl Dallas.
"... the passing of time has confirmed two things about Steve Ashley's
debut. First, it is up there with 'Leige & Leif', the first Steeleye
album, Christy Moore's 'Prosperous' and suchlike, a masterpiece of its kind;
secondly, it is still too much of a best-kept secret."
